The Story Of The Apple Startup Chime
Via my lady(?)–Jim Reekes, the man behind the Macintosh start up tone. Interesting/fun sidenote, the legal disclaimers on the Apple site have a class of sosumi.

iTunesLP.net–an unofficial resource for developers of the iTunes LP format. If you’re like me, you likely have some interest in where this format is going seeing as how they are basically stand-alone web sites distributed and delivered via iTunes. There’s the opportunity for the iTunes LP to break away from music and make it’s way into podcasts and iTunes U, that’s where I want to see it go.
According to the Globe And Mail, Telus and Bell are set to release the iPhone in November though I find the title of the article a little misleading. In the body, no reps give confirmation so the speculation is wrapped around the always useful “people familiar with the matter said”. If it’s true, people across Canada can look forward to being hosed by two more carriers and price collusion can soldier on. Addendum: Bell confirms.
This one from John Gruber: “Other than poor performance, memory consumption, and crashiness, though, Flash is well-regarded.” Flash hey? Just a note, if your site is built entirely out of Flash, I avoid it. The way I see it, if you’re willing to be hacky about how you present yourself to the world, the product you’re selling is just as hacky.
The lady is out of town for the weekend so I’m thinking of tearing it up “Windows 7” style. I hope it’s more exciting than the Snow Leopard party I threw last Sunday where I just hit “enter” and then reinstalled some software. Totally boring.
MacRabbit’s Espresso has been updated to 1.0.6. As it says in the release notes, launch time is greatly improved which goes in the “Big Plus” column. I made an effort to use Espresso all day yesterday and it has it’s benefits* over other editors. It’s not quite there yet but with the (2!) developers finally done school, they promise to make improvements on the app on a more steady basis.
*The Navigator is particularly good, allowing you to find those delightful bits of markup hidden in crappy PHP code that certain Open Source projects really like peppering throughout a folder and file structure that would make you cry if you had to look at it. Bitter? Yep, bit him too.
Steve Ballmer speaking to a group of market analysts–“I can see the Apple logos versus the PC logos so we have more work to do, more work to do. Our share is lower in this audience than the average audience. But don’t hide it. I’ve already counted them. I have been doing that since we started talking.”
"Fixie.js is an open source tool that automatically adds filler content to HTML documents." Neat.
"Gridset is a tool for making grids. It lets you create whatever type of grid you want: columnar, asymmetrical, ratio, compound, fixed, fluid, responsive and more. It serves multiple grids to your site based on breakpoints for different devices. Using it is as simple as embedding a link."
Dan Lyons goes after some folks. Brutal but somewhat truthful I'd guess.
An oldie about some of the hazards of using @import to load stylesheets.
Current thought on the bakery name: Tina Turnovers.
About 4 minutes AgoI'll be opening a bakery beside @jasondfedorchuk's Thunderdome that I'll advertise as being located 'just beyond Thunderdome'.
About 5 minutes Ago@edenthecat Icon-fonts and screenreaders have kept me away from using them. This seems interesting though: http://t.co/TEHCviXJ
