Day 2, Part 3.

Anyone familiar with comics is most likely familiar with Dr. Frederic Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent. Wertham had a real hate on for comics like EC’s run of horror comics and even our own Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin, proclaiming that the Dark Knight and the Boy Wonder were homosexuals. Senate hearings in the US would pretty much force publishers hands into creating the Comics Code Authority, a self-regulating censoring body that has gone the way of the dinosaur leading us to our current state where comics really aren’t for kids. At the shop, women would come in with their children and ask which comics were good for a 7 year old and you would have to reply “None”. Sad. Marvel and DC both have series aimed at kids but out of the number of comics they release each week, the number of kids comics is negligible and not worth most comic retailers while to stock. Poor Dr. Wertham. He raised all that fuss for nothing. It’s too bad he wasn’t around when Manga hit. Some of that stuff even makes me sick.

Speaking of all-ages comics, have you seen the new Shazam! series by Mike Kunkel? The first issue came out a few weeks ago, and it’s really, really good. It’s the first comic in a while from DC that’s not only A) Good, B) not a tie-in to a tv show or other merchandise line and C) might actually appeal to someone who started reading comics AFTER Secret Wars 2.

Yeah, I remember you posting about it a while back before it was out and I meant to check it out (just ’cause it’s the Big Red Cheese) and I didn’t notice it in the shop the other day when I was in there but I just kind of cruised down the aisle. I’ll look into it this weekend. I actually find it sad that all the kids comics are TV show tie-ins for DC. I like the Justice League Unlimited books that they put out and stuff but it’s just too bad that they don’t do a nice middle ground kind of book for the kids who are in the 7 -10 year old range. Regular Batman is a little too much and a character like Captain Marvel would be great because he’s due for a little more of an update. You can still keep him kind of cheesy but give him some balls (not Kingdom Come balls but you know what I mean) to hit that perfect sweet spot for the kids who aren’t to little. They kind of need a normal comic book. Like Spiderman was when we would have been really young. Not too over the top but not too childish.
