Canadian? Apple TV owner?
Apparently or rather the rumor is that movies will finally be available to Canada via iTunes/Apple TV which should make Apple’s media device more appealing this side of the American border. I for one am excited. Currently, the only non-audio downloads available to Canada are a handful of television programs from MTV, Comedy Central, CBC and CTV and some smaller networks and obviously video podcasts. The addition of movies is a big step in the right direction for the studios in terms of revenue that falls outside of the normal channels here in Canada. The Apple TV hasn’t really made any inroads here in Canada because of it’s perceived value or lack thereof to consumers since it’s big selling point is the availability of content for download via Apple’s already dominant iTunes store. I own one and I love it, not because it’s an Apple product but because it is seriously the most handy device I have ever used. Using the usual (not entirely legal) channels, I can download and watch any number of movies or television shows and store them on an external drive. This isn’t to say that I don’t get content from the iTunes store. I do and I actually prefer it. Buying a program from the iTunes store via the Apple TV is honestly the most hassle-free process imaginable and downloads are quick and painless. The beauty of this simplicity for the studios is that it’s easy for the consumer to make impulse buys. If it’s Sunday and I’m bored out of my skull and nothing’s on TV, I generally head over to the Comedy Network section of iTunes and buy an episode of Comedy Central Presents but I would prefer to rent a movie. It’s how I roll. I for one hope that all this is true and we see movies heading our way in the near future. It’ll make my weekends better.
