Just a quick note.
Quick shout out to Chip Kidd for properly setting his books. Now available, The Learners. There is something so wonderful about not breaking the spine of the book you’re reading.
EDIT: I should point out what I mean here. For a little background on some of the schools of thought on page construction, you should read this primer on Wikipedia. Nowadays, it seems that most books feel comfortable with a 1/2″ to 3/4″ margin. To me, my reading habits and my undeniable quirks, this is nowhere near enough space. Healthy margins provide a better experience all around. Ample room on each side allows room for holding the book and means that you do not have to crack the book open to read near the hinge. A large margin at the bottom allows the eye to rest before your next page. To me it’s important. To others, maybe not so much. The only thing I can say is buy a book laid out to some classic proportions, read it and then tell me if it was a more enjoyable read. I’m gonna guess it is.
