Everyone’s doing it.
Top ten, top 25. Everyone has a list for what the best records of 2007 were so I might as well throw my hat into the ring. Though, honestly, I didn’t buy a lot of music this year since I was only really interested in 2 records. Yeah, kind of slow for music around here. It seemed like I was always buying records but maybe I wasn’t. Anyway, here they are:
1. Battles - Mirrored: This is the one I was looking forward to the most and, yeah, it was good. I still think I prefer the ep’s but this was I guess a little more solid in most peoples eyes.
2. Shellac - Excellent Italian Greyhound: I haven’t seen this on any lists. I thought it was awesome. The End Of Radio is a song I could listen to over and over and over again. Maybe I just have a soft spot for Shellac but really, shouldn’t everyone?
3. Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity: Believe E.S.P is just awesome. Like, quite honestly, the most perfect riff ever written. It’s really awesome. I thought the rest of the record was pretty great too. If you get a chance to download the 0 Seconds Pause Ep, you should check out the Swizz Beats/Deerhoof mashup.
4. Pinback - From Nothing To Nowhere Single. Honestly, after several listens, the album sucks but at least this song is great. Like great enough to earn a spot on it’s own.
5. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Yeah, I like Spoon. This is not the most solid release they’ve ever done but the songs that rock, rule and the songs that don’t, rot.
6.Ted Leo - Living With The Living. If only for The Sons Of Cain. That song is pretty much perfect Ted Leo. It’s really too bad the rest of the album didn’t measure up to that perfect standard. Honestly? I could listen to that song all day and not get bored.
7. Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone. Maybe I’m just a sucker for melodic, dreamy, guitar instrumentals. Probably.
8. Mos Def - True Magic. Nothing is ever going to top Black On Both Sides but, this one, after a few listens, comes pretty close.
9. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible. Not as good as Funeral. Throwing No Cars Go on there was lame. Still, a good band on a bad day.
10. Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice. Yeah, Ok. Technically it came out in 2002. I hated this record when I first heard it. Why is it on this list? I seriously listened to this I would say, and this it totally true, 180 days of the year. Like every day going to work. It’s the album I throw on when I don’t know what to listen to because I know I’m not going to get bored of it. To say I’ve grown to appreciate this record is kind of an understatement.
One that didn’t make my list is Blonde Redhead - 23 because, while being one of my all time favorite bands, this record just sucked every egg in the basket. So disappointed. Best album of 2008? I’ve decided to start writing again. By myself. I’m going to try to do one song every 2 weeks. That’s my New Years resolution. I’m sure it will mostly just suck but we’ll see. I’m going to pressure myself to be less self conscious about it. Wish me luck. If you have any records that you think should be on here, add them to the comments so I know what I should check out. Word up.
